Chapter 25
A virulent stomach virus had been going around the area. After paging Dr. Stone for a toddler with a temperature of 104°, the little girl began crying to the point of choking until she became so overwrought she projectile vomited. Disgusting chunks of bile and chewed breakfast splattered into my mouth and onto my face. My first inclination was a chain reaction of puking myself. However, I took it in nursing stride, cleaned the mess, and moved the patient to another waiting room.
In the employee bathroom, I rinsed my mouth with diluted peroxide and changed into the spare scrubs I kept in my locker for such occasions. Congratulating myself on my supreme immune system, I ate a hearty lunch. By the end of my shift, the shivering began.
I made the drive home, feeling achy and nauseous, opened my cabin door and sprawled across my bed. Kona licked my sweaty face as I moaned.
"What happened to you?" Cole stood at the threshold alarmed.
"I caught some bug." I pulled the blanket around me trying to get warm though the outside was sweltering. "Will you take Kona home with you for the night?"
"Sure." He came in and put his hand on my forehead. "You're burning up."
"I'm freezing," I said through chattering teeth. "You better go, I'm contagious."
"I don't ever get sick." He went in the bathroom and returned with a glass of water and a cold, wet washcloth.
Pressing the cloth into my eye sockets I mumbled, "Thanks."
He tucked me beneath the covers. "Get some rest."
My mouth became dry and I chugged the water only temporarily quenching my thirst. Involuntarily my esophagus reversed the flow. I ran for the bathroom, barely having time to lift the toilet seat. As the retching racked my body, I noticed Cole. Once my stomach settled, I sank onto my knees and rested my head on the cold white porcelain. "I'd rather you not see my like this," I said.
He shrugged. "It's nothing I haven't experienced before."
"Yeah, well, holding back your drunken girlfriend's hair in college isn't the same."
He laughed, helping me back to bed. I drifted in and out of consciousness. Having enough of the fitful sleep, I stumbled to the shower where I stood under the stinging hot water. My temperature elevated turning the chill to sweat. I returned to bed naked but for a towel, my need for blankets gone.
Clinging to unconsciousness, I felt movement above me. A form stood near the bedside. Shuttering, I tried to find the shadow in the darkness. A hand moved my wet hair off my face and tentatively touched the small of my back. In the nightmare, I cried out but the fever wouldn't allow me to wake.
Morning sunshine dotted my vision. I turned my open blinds but not before seeing Cole walking my dog.
I knocked on the window and saw Kona track the sound.
Flinging the door wide, the dog bounced up and down until I stooped to his level to receive my morning kisses.
Cole joined him and placed his hand on my forehead.
